When is Mother’s Day 2018?

There are some dates you never want to forget, yet always struggle to remember, Mother’s Day is one of those days. So, if you are in the UK, USA or much of Europe, take note of when it falls this year.

In the UK Mother’s Day is celebrated on Sunday, March 11 in 2018. In the United States and many other countries around the world, Mother’s Day 2018 is being celebrated on Sunday, May 13.

In the UK, Mothering Sunday was originally a day for servants, allowing women to return to their hometown and worship in their local church, with their families.

In recent times the the religious aspect of Mother’s Day has, for the most part, been forgotten and it has instead become a day for children and families to honour and celebrate mums and maternal figures.

Why does the UK have a different Mother’s Day to the USA?

In the UK, the original event had nothing to do with mothers at all. It was a day for Christians, with domestic servants being given the day off to return home and worship in their “mother” church.

The US event was launched separately and did not have it’s roots in religion, instead being dedicated entirely to mothers.

It was in 1914 that Mother’s Day was first established in the US, owing to campaigns by the mums’ groups that were formed during the Civil War. Many other countries have since adopted America’s Mothering Sunday date.

Why does the date of Mother’s Day change each year?

In the UK, the date of Mothering Sunday is linked to Easter, which also differs each year, as it is determined by the lunar calendar.

Mother’s Day always falls on the fourth Sunday during the period of Lent in the UK.

Whereas Mothering Sunday in the US is an annual holiday held on the second Sunday in May, so the date again slightly varies each year.
